Academia Thules - a presentation

The Academia Thules ad Studia Romana Antiqua et Nova is a new form of online education, an online academy of a special kind. What makes us special is that we aim to provide a university-level service for free and our operations are arranged as voluntary work in the online-learning environment. Please note that Academia Thules is not an accredited institution of learning.

We offer degrees and independent courses about Ancient Roman culture and modern Roman organisations. Currently the Academia Thules works in cooperation with Nova Roma and the Societas Via Romana.

Other Academia activities include research-projects and cooperation with different groups inside the republic of Nova Roma. The mission of the Academia is to serve its students by preparing, collecting and distributing information about ancient Rome and modern Roman organisations. The Academia staff will gladly answer any questions you might have; the easiest way to contact us is through the Contacts-page. Your question may have already been answered, so you can take a look at the Quaesita Responsa (FAQ) page.

The Academia is a registered non-profit organisation in Finland: Academia Thules ad Studia Romana Antiqua et Nova ry. The Academia works under the laws of Finland, but students and teachers are most welcome from all countries.

The Courses
The courses are organized in an online learning environment, similar to online discussion groups. Courses have their own Praeceptors (teachers) who are responsible for the teaching. Courses have precise timetables and usually contain some pieces of homework, various tests, and a final exam. There are different types of courses. More information about the courses can be found in the Study Guide.

Studying at the Academia
Studying will require a certain amount of dedication and time; the amount of time and work a student has to be prepared to devote to studying varies from one course to another. More information will be found on the Information for Students and Student Admissions pages.

The Teachers
Teaching in the Academia requires time and an email-address. Good written communication skills are a must. The Academia will do everything it can to help the teachers by offering ready-made material and help in planning the courses. More information on being a teacher can be found on the Being a Teacher page.

Cooperation
The Academia offers the possibility to carry out research projects in cooperation with the Academia. This is an ideal form of cooperation between individuals and the Academia. The results of those research projects will be used by the Academia in its teaching and as a reference collection. More information can be found at the Cooperation page. Also on that page can be found information about how different organisations can cooperate with the Academia Thules.
