What is the Academia?
The Academia is an organization whose goal is to provide teaching on the culture of Ancient Rome to new Roman enthusiasts and to anyone interested. We are a non-profit organization registered in Finland with an international staff and Board of Directors. Please note that Academia Thules is not a certified organization of education so our courses and grades are not equivalent to internationally-recognized higher level education. However we are proud to say that all our teaching and operations will some day be on a par with real universities. Read more about Academia Thules here.
Academia Thules has total neutrality towards all religions even while we offer courses about ancient religions. Same neutrality applies into political questions. Academia Thules is in no way responsible or has any means to influence on what other instances we are having cooperation with have as their opinion about these matters. Academia Thules condems all sorts of illegal activities and operates under Finnish laws.
Who is entitled to study at the Academia?
Basically, everyone who wants to: our only requirement is full legal age. See more information on the Student Admission page.
When was the Academia established?
The whole idea took form at the beginning of the year 2001, and the actual organization began in the month of May. The Academia was born on the 29th of April 2001.
What courses are available for subscription?
Please see the Study Guide.
What courses will there be in the future?
Please, visit our Study Guide to see the whole range of courses we currently offer. For the future we can only say that we aim to provide many new subjects and broaden the selection of courses available in the current subjects as well.
Can I suggest a course?
Absolutely. Your contribution would be very welcome on this issue. Please click here to express your opinion on future courses.
How can I become a Student/Praeceptor?
Please follow our easy instructions:
-Student Admissions
-See more information about being teacher on the Being a Teacher page, the Study Guide and the Open Positions page.
How can I become a Scriba?
As a Scriba, your work will be to help the Academia in a specific task. Scribae are vital for the Academia, because their work keeps it up and running. If you want to contribute to the Academia, but you do not have the time or inclination to accept the duties and strenous work associated with the highest offices, there will probably be a Scriba position you can successfully fill (and even extract some benefits from!).
What do I get if I study in the Academia?
You will have the opportunity to improve your knowledge about ancient Rome and modern Roman organisations. You will also have the opportunity to meet other people who share your interests and learn with them. Finally, the courses you take will be registered on your personal profile in the Academia archives, so you will be able to include them on your CV and earn an Academia degree.
