When choosing your major and secondary subjects, it's important to find out if the subject you have been thinking about contains enough courses to be suitable as a major or secondary subject. This information can found from the Study Guide under each subject. See also the information below about the Structure of Studies.
Degrees
Length and quality of degree is based on study credits. Academia offers three degrees: Baccalaureatus, Magister and Doctor. Each degree contains a given minimum number of credits in the major subject and in the secondary subject(s). There is usually no maximum number of credits in any of the degrees.
The Academia offers three degrees:
Baccalaureatus = at least 25 credits
Magister = Baccalaureatus + at least 25 credits
Doctor = Magister + at least 25 credits
Baccalaureatus = 25 cr.
introductory studies (voluntary) 5 cr. max
basic studies in major subject 10 cr. min
intermediate studies in major subject 5 cr. min
basic studies in secondary subject 1 5 cr. min
Magister = (25)+25 cr.
intermediate studies in major subject +5 cr. min
advanced studies in major subject + 5 cr. min
basic studies in first secondary subject +5 cr. min
intermediate studies in first secondary subject +5 cr. min
basic studies in second secondary subject +5 cr. min
Doctor = (25+25)+25 cr.
advanced studies in major subject + 5 cr. min
intermediate studies in first secondary subject +5 cr. min
advanced studies in first secondary subject + 5 cr. min
intermediate studies in second secondary subject +5 cr. min
Dissertatio doctoralis 5 cr.

When studying, we recommend that you start with the introductory / preliminary studies and basic studies of your major subject and then little by little expand your activities into secondary subjects. It is also advisable to design your studies in such a way that the workload is distributed evenly throughout the duration of the studies.
It is also advisable to think carefully in the beginning of the studies that which subjects one really finds interesting. There can be unlimited amount of secondary subjects, but since one hasn't got unlimited resources, careful thinking of one's priorities is highly recommendable. The student can change major subject and he isn't mandated to do more than minimum amount of secondary subjects, but changing of major subject should be thought out carefully before doing it, since it might mean increased workload as the student needs to do more work in some other subject.
It is also advisable to think carefully at the outset which subjects you really find interesting. You can study an unlimited amount of secondary subjects, but since your resources are not unlimited it is sensible to think carefully about your priorities. You can change your major subject, but this should only be done after careful thought since it might mean more work for you.
When choosing courses, students need to think about:
-how many credits they need at that level of study (e.g. basic studies in major subject)
-which of the courses are mandatory at that level (e.g. since no degree requires more than 10 credits in basic studies and some subjects include 10 credits worth of mandatory basic studies there may be no need for students to choose any basic studies in addition to the mandatory ones)
-whether they have what it takes to do the course, (e.g., if the course requires him to read a certain book, can they find this book and read it? What is the language of instruction or other course contents? if they dont like writing essays if there is an alternative to essays in some other course?)
-what are their own interests and priorities
At all points of studying students should be aware of the amount of credits their degrees need at each level of study and each subject: this will help enormously when planning their studies as well as giving motivation in the form of clear goals.
